DRA PLAN
Kansys Inc. continuously conducts an intensive effort to document our Business Resumption Plan for all of our related business practices. This plan better prepares Kansys to continue essential business processes should an incident occur. It also helps Kansys to be less vulnerable to incidents.
This plan addresses the questions “What does Kansys do when we can not use our facility?” or “What can Kansys do now to better prepare to respond when our facility is unavailable?” Why it is unavailable is the issue. It could be as a result of a fire, tornado or massive power outage. We are considering that our offices and all of the resources we have available for day-to-day operations are no longer available.
The types of disasters that Kansys Inc is most susceptible to are: tornadoes, fire and vandalism. The region does not lie in a major earthquake risk area or in a politically sensitive area in terms of terrorism risk. Regarding tornado risks, the most violent tornados, know as F5, account for only 1.5% of all reported tornados. The Kansas City area has not historically had any F5 tornados although this does not eliminate the risk.
In terms of lesser tornadoes, the Kansys data center has been built to withstand all but the strongest types of tornados. The data center is built within a concrete bunker with steel rebar fully incased in the walls and roof. There is UPS via an APC InfraSturXure for power distribution and battery backup and a Cummins diesel generator is present for outages lasting more than 5 minutes.
Regarding fire risk, Kansys is located in a new building built to conform to strict local fire code regulations and is less than 1 mile from the nearest fire station. The vandalism/theft risk has been mitigated several ways. First of all, in 2006, Olathe, KS had approximately 2,031 property crimes per 100,000 people, which is almost half the national average of 3,906. The Kansys facility has on site video surveillance as well as security monitoring by ACS Electronic Systems. Our building is open to the public, but only one entrance is available and visitors must check in with a receptionist to gain further access to our facilities. “Tailgating” is not allowed and does not occur. The data center has additional security measures requiring a unique security code for entrance. Only a small number of employees have access to this most sensitive area.
The major earthquake threat area in this region occurs around the New Madrid fault located in Eastern Missouri. While there is a high probability of a magnitude 6.0 or higher earthquake in the New Madrid fault area by 2040, it is predicted that the Kansas City metropolitan area would experience no more than magnitude 4.0 activity in a worse case scenario. A magnitude 4.0 earthquake is not typically associated with any property damage or service interruptions.
In terms of assessing a terror threat in this region, it is difficult to predict. The Kansys facility is located approximately 20 miles from the Kansas City, MO city center area where the area’s highest population densities exist. The facility is approximately 5 to 8 miles away from the area’s suburban concentration of corporate offices of major corporations, and approximately 1 to 2 miles from the Olathe, KS city center. The closest ‘high visibility’ terrorist target listed by Homeland Security is the Sunflower Ammunition Plant located more than 4 miles from the Kansys facility. ‘The Plant has been closed for years’.
